Substantial morphological variation in specimens in deep and southern range collections.

Compare with H. lepidonotus. Light orange-pink, numerous long dorsal spines (note pattern), inflated, relatively small, longer perimeter spines.

Ocean range (global):
Aleutians, Canada to Gulf of California.
Published depth range:
110 - 2373 m (as shallow as 30 m in British Columbia).
Habitat description:
Benthic.
