Data Use and Citation
Our still images and deep-sea footage are primarily used to support scientific research, and secondarily to support our educational and outreach efforts, including via our sister institution, the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We limit the release of our video and images to news, feature stories, and education projects that focus specifically on MBARI research and technology. We do not have the resources to support still images and/or video footage request for commercial ventures, such as advertisements, stock collections, web sites, or picture books.
Educational use
Before you use any images, data, text or other materials on this web site (www.mbari.org and dsg.mbari.org), please carefully read the terms and conditions of the terms of use for MBARI’s website. By using any of these materials, you are consenting to be bound by this agreement. If you do not accept all of the terms of this agreement, you are not authorized to use any materials on this site.
Research use
If substantial amounts of data from the DSG (or VARS) are extracted and are being considered for use in secondary analyses or publications, please carefully review our data characteristics disclaimer: About. If a publication or other scientific report results, authors agree to acknowledge MBARI as the data source in those publications. Please also provide reprints/links (.pdf, doi link, etc.) to Nancy Jacobsen Stout (jana@mbari.org) for the MBARI Library. It is generally expected that any science publication relying heavily on information or interpretation from one or more MBARI scientists and annotation technicians will acknowledge those scientists, typically by including them as collaborators and co-authors when their contribution has been significant.
